About

QIOZ is a free-to-use language learning platform developed by the Ile-de-France Region for its inhabitants. Its pedagogical approach is innovative and fun, based on clips from films and TV series, on music videos, and documentaries.

Users can access the service from their computer, tablet or smartphone, and can choose to learn one or more of the following languages: English, German, Spanish and French. No minimum level of language proficiency is required. Depending on the objectives and needs of the user, specific modules are proposed and a virtual coach accompanies the learning process. Regular level tests measure progress, and the user’s evolving language proficiency can be assessed according to the standards of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Giving residents of the Ile-de-France Region free access to QIOZ is part of a broader desire to make Île-de-France a multilingual region by 2022. The rate of unemployment, the 2024 Olympic Games, and Brexit are just a few of the many challenges that cannot be faced without a better proficiency in foreign languages.

The Region also relies on high schools to boost the foreign language proficiency of young people and thus to develop the attractiveness of the Region. The Regional government is thus developing its international educational offering, with the objective of creating 20,000 student places in the international sections and bilingual classes of public high schools in the Paris Region by 2020. This also involves the opening of three new international high schools in Île-de-France by the start of the 2021 school year.
